The latest Spider-Man movie gave the Marvel Cinematic Universe a taste of the Multiverse. In the film, Peter Parker Tom Holland asks Doctor Strange Benedict Cumberbatch for help after the world learns he's secretly Spider-Man. However, Doctor Strange's memory wipe spell goes wrong when Peter Parker meddles with it. Due to the enchantment's failure, beings from other universes enter the MCU, and the entire Multiverse could be at stake. After the spell backfires, several notable Spider-Man villains make their way into the MCU. Tom Holland's Peter Parker first faces villains from Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man films. These include Alfred Molina's Doc Ock, and Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin isn't far behind him. The film also brings in villains from Andrew Garfield's The Amazing Spider-Man movies. Jamie Foxx's Electro joins the film, sporting a new look and seeking the boosted power available in the MCU. Additionally, Rhys Ifans' Lizard makes an appearance and is still obsessed with turning everyone into reptiles. There are several Marvel plot holes in Spider-Man No Way Home, but a supposed goof involving Electro isn't one of them. In No Way Home, Electro looks more like Jamie Foxx than the character's original disheveled look in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. He also gets an updated yellow color for his electricity instead of his previous blue. Since the other villains mostly look the same, fans have seen Electro's vastly different looks as a plot hole. However, Marvel may have already explained the change with Jamie Foxx's character. Getting new powers often changes heroes in Marvel movies, and Electro is experiencing that in No Way Home. In Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man films, his version of Peter Parker becomes visibly stronger and loses the need for glasses shortly after receiving his powers. Jamie Foxx's Electro is going through a similar change in No Way Home. In the MCU, Electro tells Peter Parker, "The power. It's different. I like it." That different power likely led to Electro's changed looks, and past Marvel films set a precedent. Additionally, entering the MCU changes most of the villains. Jamie Foxx's character changes drastically, losing his bad teeth and comb-over due to the new universe. Still, Alfred Molina's Doc Ock has a slightly different look with an updated hairstyle as well. Similarly, Rhys Ifans' Lizard appears to have more of a snout than his previous iteration. Jamie Foxx wasn't especially fond of his Amazing Spider-Man 2 look, so his character likely had to look different to bring him back. But, unlike the complicated story in Spider-Man No Way Home, the change is easy to explain. Electro is not a new villain in the Spider-Man universe, but he is often one that is overlooked when compared to more prominent villains like Doctor Otto Octavius or The Green Goblin. Despite this, however, he often makes an appearance within the Sinister Six, a team of villains brought together usually with the primary goal of taking Spider-Man out of the picture permanently. Every now and then though he gets a depiction as a solo villain that keeps the neighborhood web-slinger on his toes. So, who is Electro, what does he do, and why is he important to Spider-Man No Way Home's newest trailer? Electro was first introduced into the Spider-Man universe in The Amazing Spider-Man 9 comic, released in 1964. The original story behind the development of his powers comes from when a burst of lightning hit a power line that the former electrical engineer was repairing. This incident caused a mutation to occur in which he became a walking capacitor for electricity. He sported a look that only comic book characters in the 1960s could really pull off, a skin-tight green and yellow suit with a mask that had lightning bolts jutting out in every direction. Later incarnations have since resigned him to be a little more "with the times" but the green and yellow combination often still remains. His powers primarily include the ability to generate and discharge electricity. He can also absorb electricity from any equipment that uses it, and there have been varying degrees to how much electricity he can hold. This discharging of electricity makes him a deadly foe if his opponent is not prepared, but a properly insulated suit or drenching him in water usually ends with his defeat in the end. In this game, he joins up with Octavious and the rest of the Sinister Six to defeat Spider-Man, an arc that has been done in other iterations of the Sinister Six as mentioned previously. In this version, Electro utilizes exoskeleton gear to help enhance his abilities as well. This was a new take on the villain that is used commonly within the more modern depictions of the character, but it wasn't the first time such an idea was implemented for him. Electro had another big appearance before his iteration on the PlayStation 4, and that was on the big screens in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, released in 2014. In this movie, Electro is played by Jamie Foxx, redesigned from the ground up. In this iteration, Electro gained his powers not from lightning hitting the power line, but from a tank of genetically-engineered electric eels that he fell into while repairing said power line. The most distinct change in this iteration is perhaps the choice to make Electro blue from head to toe. This change immediately separates him from other people, and it becomes impossible for him to blend in with the crowd. From that point on, he would be unable to hide his identity, and this only strengthened his feelings of being an outsider and a nobody. Electro also idolizes Spider-Man in this version, or at least he does until Spider-Man stops him from charging up in Times Square. Electro is temporarily captured and studied until Harry Osborn Dane Dehaan, another major character in the Spider-Man universe, helps him to break out of containment and gives Electro a suit to control his powers in exchange for his aid in infiltrating Oscorp, but he is once again stopped from taking New York City's electricity by Spider-Man with the help of Gwen Stacy Emma Stone. Image via Sony The 2014 movie iteration of Electro is perhaps the most important when it comes to the latest in the Tom Holland saga of Spider-Man movies. In the newest trailer for Spider-Man No Way Home, viewers can see multiple shots of Electro, once again played by Foxx. However, there is one critical difference the lightning he is shooting out is a bright yellow reminiscent of the other depictions of Electro. In addition, shots of Electro show that he doesn't look mutated, unlike the version we see in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Instead, Electro takes on a more muted look and seems to be wearing a mechanical suit. So, what does this mean for the electricity-spewing villain? We already know that Spider-Man No Way Home has to deal with different universes. So, there is likely a chance that this Electro isn't necessarily from the same universe that contains Andrew Garfield's iteration of Spider-Man. Regardless of the answer, we see a lot of him in this trailer when compared to other villains like Sandman and The Lizard, meaning there's a good chance he has a larger role to play overall. Other scenes from the trailer depict Electro fighting Spider-Man one on one, and an audio clip of him saying "you're not gonna take this away from me" can also be heard. In one of the final scenes, viewers can see Electro amongst other Spider-Man villains such as the aforementioned Sandman and The Lizard. This goes on to confirm Electro's involvement in some sort of villain team, most likely the Sinister Six, though the exact composition and purpose of this alliance has yet to be confirmed. Audiences can only hope he is getting the redemption many wished he could have had after his portrayal seven years ago. We don't know exactly how much of a role Electro is going to play, but we do know he's looking refreshed and recharged for what is sure to be the biggest Spider-Man movie in the Tom Holland trilogy. Even if you haven’t seen the film yet, it should be common knowledge by now from trailers that the plot of the film centers around a botched spell by Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange to make the world forget Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is Spider-Man, which brings a myriad of villains to his universe, including Electro. Don’t cast that spell from here on out, the article will contain spoilers for Spider-Man No Way Home. The spell was interrupted by Peter when he insisted on adding qualifiers to its parameters such that his girlfriend and close friends and family would still remember his real identity. Unfortunately, this inadvertently causes villains who know of Spider-Man’s real identity from other universes to come into Holland’s world. At face value, there seems to be a minor plot hole with this element of the film. It was previously established that Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock, Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Rhys Ifans’ Lizard, and Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman all knew of Spider-Man’s real identity as had been established in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and The Amazing Spider-Man. But when it comes to Foxx’s Electro, there was no scene to establish he had discovered Spider-Man’s real identity in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. However, a seemingly innocuous line in Spider-Man No Way Home might actually serve as an explanation for why Electro knew Spider-Man’s identity in his native Andrew Garfield-Spidey universe. Generally speaking, each of the villains in No Way Home gets transported to the Holland universe in the moments before they are killed. For Electro, that scene was when he is supercharged with electricity by Spider-Man at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Here’s the line Foxx utters, recalling the moment. “I was stuck in the grid, absorbing data, I was about to turn into pure energy and then… and then uh… and then- oh shit, I was about to die,” he says. As Reddit user u/Ed_Derick pointed out on the r/FanTheories subreddit, this reference to “absorbing data” was likely no accident. “[I] believe that since Electro was connected to the power grid of the entire town, he might have been able to tap into the internet, or some stored data somewhere that allowed him to know who Spider-[M]an is. He might have been absorbing data from every device connected to the internet or connected to all devices plugged in,” the user wrote. The user went on to explain that even if the villain was jacked into the internet for just a millisecond or so, that still could’ve been enough time to perhaps connect to Peter’s webcam and see his web-shooters laying in his room while also taking note of the computer username to which the webcam was connected. That may sound like a stretch, but for a being who was on the cusp of becoming “pure energy,” it seems plausible in the fantastical world that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe that Electro would also possess the super-human computational abilities to actually digest that brief glimmer of information so quickly.
